    KOAN OF THE WEEK
Blue Cliff Record #31 / Book of Serenity #16

    Case:
Mayu, with his ring-staff in hand, came to Zhangjing.
He circled Zhangjing's dais three times, shook the ring-staff and stood there bolt upright.
    Zhangjing said, "Right, right!"
    (Xuedou comments, "Wrong!")
    Mayu then came to Nanquan.
He circled Nanquan's dais three times, shook the ring-staff and stood there bolt upright.
Nanquan said, "Not right, not right!"
    (Xuedou comments, "Wrong!")
Then, Mayu said, "Master Zhangjing said, 'Right, right!' Why, Master, do you say, 'Not right,
    not right!'?"
Nanquan said, "With Zhangjing it is right, but with you it is not right. This is nothing but a whirling of the wind. In the end, it will perish."

    Questions:
What is, or might be, "right" about Mayu's display? What might be "not right" about it?
In your life, what has been the role of approval or disapproval of your teachers/mentors/elders/bosses/leaders?
Unpack Nanquan's statement at the end.
